Dear Martin,
The telescopes do not have the same power. The fat one is about 3x while the log one (inverting) has a power of 7x.
You can easily see this by looking through them at the same distant object. Therefore the long telescope is harder to focus because it magnifies your hand tremor. But with little practice you can handle it, and you will see that it is superior for almost all observations. It is not harder to aim than a standard 8x binocular. With some modern sextants an 8x prismatic telescope comes, which is essentially a half of the binocular. They have optical properties similar to the SNO-T 7x but their disadvantage is that they are much heavier.
Alex.
