Brad - I'm pretty sure it does work. Assuming that the Body S intersects the path of the Moon's disk somewhere then there is a sperical triangle formed with the Zenith SZM. This has a base which is the Lunar Distance (=Semi Diameter in the case of an Occultation) and sides SZ, MZ corresponding to the Co altitudes of the Body and the Moon. These need not be equal. Solving the triangle resolves the issue ( I hope). Sketch may help showing three cases.
I've probably become a lunatic since I started looking at this problem since it leads on to so many other issues. Slocum used the term "Lunarian"
