I apologize in advance if the old message resurfaces and causes a duplication.] Wolfgang, I just learned through your question that the name "armillary sphere" can also be applied to an instructional device. But here we were talking about an observation instrument. See this web site, which has a good description and pictures of both type: http://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/starry/armillmaths.html Wolfgang K?berer wrote: > I always thought that the armillary sphere is a model of the Ptolemaic > system; its only use was to demonstrate the celestial spheres and the > "workings of the heavens".
