I'm teaching my class in "Lunars" (longitude by lunar distances) this weekend at Mystic Seaport. We cover the math, science, history, modern practice, and also the myths of lunars in this workshop. Assuming the weather cooperates, we will have some opportunities to shoot lunars, too. Still plenty of time to sign up.
Lunars are the primal core of "pure" celestial navigation. With a sextant, some mathematical and astronomical tables, and a sharp pencil, you can determine your latitude and longitude --no fancy chronometer required. Leave that devil's clock... that black box... at home by your damn smartphone, and sail by following the Moon!
