Hi Frank
While going through some old "Navigation Notes from Starpath (issue 98, Winter 2008)" I stumbled upon an article from Geoffrey Kolbe about a cel nav weekend at Mystic Seaport (June 6-8, 2008). In his article Geoffrey mentioned the following:
"...Frank talked about his new innovation of using lunar distances to generate lines of position and a position fix, where GMT is assumed to be known. Frank used computer animated ‘cones of position’ to show us how moon to other-body distances could be used to generate lines of position on the earth. Useful accuracy in the final fix would depend critically on the accuracy of the measured moon to other-body distances, but the fact that no horizon is required makes this discovery of Frank’s a useful tool in the celestial navigation armoury.”
I am curious about these "computer generated cones of position". I did participate in all of your Workshops some years back (and have registered for the upcoming Lunars one in April), but I can not remember seeing/hearing about these "cones of position".
Is there something I missed? Can you explain this? (or is it as a topic for the Lunars workshop?)
Thanks, Huub
