Tony,
Your understanding is operationally all correct however the my point here is that since you have a proportional logarithm given in the Almanac (2620) you should use it in preference to the value you get by doing the subtraction and table look up yourself. It is easier, quicker and, for the reasons explained in my earlier post, more accurate as well. In fact we can infer from the proportional logarithm in the Almanac that the true difference is just a bit closer 1°38.5’ than the value of 1°38.4’ you get by subtraction,
