    Note that the difficulty of this little division problem was quite high two centuries ago, and that's why proportional logs were originally invented. Today, it's no issue.

    I'm sure people of the past were not dumber than us at all. :) Or, at least - not dumber than me. I'm still to learn what they did and how they did it.

    The topic of navigation in what we would call today an emergency situation (without a GPS/GLONASS, a radio or a precision chronometer) is VERY interesting. Right now I'm replicating the device once called the "Cruiserfix" (as of "Yachting Monthly" magazine, March 1974, p387 ). The similar non-electronic way to know the UTC is why I'm interested in lunars.
