Lunars using planets? stars on ecliptic?

I thank you for the explanation of side vs. perpendicularity error. Yes that makes sense to me. I remember reading about it in a manual....it didn't stick aparently at the time...that part of my brain went on vacation without me....new enough at this art so every day is a voyage of discovery......
I have so far focused on sun/moon lunars.
Moon/star and moon planet sound interesting.
Due to limited availability of sun/moon, a lunar navigator must have had other choice targets. I was eyeballing jupiter last night up there in scorpio and wondering how that might be I have read that the most critical thing in moon and stars/planets is that they track closely to the ecliptic for reasons of accuracy due to divergent angles reducing accuracy.
