You are asking good questions. I do not believe the use of artificial horizons for lunars has not been discussed previously.
One important detail in using an artificial horizon is you have to correct the arc for IC before your divide the sextant angle in half. This may not have been the case in the example calculations you are citing but it's a mistake I have made myself in the past.
