Frank's lunar reduction method is well tested and easy to use.

    You will find it here:

Tonight there is absolutely no wind and the skies are clear. I had not planned to take any sights but made a late decision to attempt sights of Sirius and Canopus with the glass removed from the AH. When I went outside I saw Venus in all it glory but what really drew my attention was the moon. It is its first quarter and the limb was facing venus. A Lunar!

I managed to take three sights before Venus was too low in the AH.

I know that there are many threads here about lunars and that there are many methods of solving lunars. I have glanced through some of the threads but made no attempt to understand the methods. I will post the sights here and ask that a lunerian (when they have some spare time) look at the data and see if it makes sense. If the observations are sensible then please direct me to a reduction method. Note that I prefer to do it the 19th century way although I suppose plugging the numbers into a computer program is a quick way of checking the sights.

I am assuming that  moon and venus altitudes and the moon venus distance are what is required.

    In the space of an hour I went from believing that I would never do a lunar to realising that one day I may proudly call myself a Lunerian (-;

I will also work the Venus and Moon sights as intercepts. These are the first moon sights I have taken.

    Here is the data.

    IE  0.5 off the arc

    Moon  bodies superimposed.

Venus and Moon altitudes are as observed in the AH.

Moon - Venus was to limb of moon.

As discussed in another thread all times are recorded in UTC. I noted times for all observations but will not give them as I understand that the purpose of the lunar is to determine time (-;     However I can provide times if required.

    Date 5th Jan 2017

    Sight 1:

    Taken about 0823

    Moon - Venus   36° 29.5'

    Venus 41°40' 40"

    Moon  69°  11'

    Sight 2:

    Taken about  0838

    Moon - Venus  36° 32.5'

    Venus  35°  15'

    Moon  66° 31'  10"

    Sight 3:

    Taken about 0848

    Moon - Venus  36° 43' 10"

    Venus  33° 50'

    Moon 63° 17'

Looking forward to the results with much anticipation.  Thanks.
