Sorry to post this after Frank said "let's drop the matter," but here's a very interesting and relevant story from the (UK) telegraph saying that the INMARSAT folks have worked and reworked the aircraft engine "ping" data and narrowed the location of the last transmission down to a very small area -- in the southern Indian Ocean.

As a result, the Malaysian government has officially announced that the plane indeed went down in the search area and there is no hope for survivors.
