Declination, in French d?clinaison, is the angle between true North and the direction of the horizontal magnetic field. deviation, in French d?viation, is the angle between the compass needle and the horizontal magnetic field. the vertical magnetic field is called inclinaison. French Navy officers in NATO operations use the English terminology.
