David, the sextant with polarised filters - used as a direction/orientation device - should be pointed upwards at 90° away from the position of Sun. It is there the sky illumination has maximum of polarisation (most contrast between the P-filter sections). No magic in that.
I just wanted to know if one could do temporary course shifts - specifically to see the Sun. I read that the wind set and drift could be measured by flying a +45°(for 2 minutes)_-90°(for 2 minutes)_+45° track.
