I used the sextant filters. On my Tamaya, using all three horizon filters makes the image the same intensity as that seen trough the densest index mirror filter so this setup works fine with the artificial horizon. If you have filter material just put it in front of your telescope, I use a rubber band around the telescope to hold the sheet in place, and then you don't need any of the sextant filters. This might also make for more accurate sights if the various filters on your sextant are not each perfect since when putting the filter in front of the telescope both rays of light go through the same filter. Also use this setup to check the index error using the touching the limbs of the sun method.

While the following might be delving into "ancient history", looking at the photos I wonder as to the following, your set-up provided nothing in the way of sun shades. Did you rely entirely on your sextants sun shades?
I get good results using a Davis AH, water in their dish, have not gotten satisfactory results, possibly my fault, with a mirror AH. I use theatrical lighting gels as sun shades, along with those on my sextant, I expect that leveling might be my problem.
