Waaay back on May 23, when I suggested the possibility of manufacturing new Bygrave rules, I wrote: "Even just in the cel nav enthusiast market, I bet you could sell a thousand of them [newly manufactured Bygrave rules] if the price was right (under $50??)." I didn't get around to mentioning back then that there is a larger market than just celestial navigation enthusiasts. There seems to be a fairly large market for slide rules and other manual computing devices in a broader community of "engineering arts" enthusiasts and also fans of aviation history. I respect very greatly Ken Gebhart's understanding of the marketplace and Gary has said that Ken didn't think this was a commercially viable project. But if one or several people were interested in getting the project to the prototype phase, then it may be possible to find a manufacturer willing to do a small run (a few hundred?) in some part of the world where manufacturing can still be done cheaply (I'm thinking of Vietnam, but there are plenty of possibilities). And once you've got product in hand, it's just a matter of advertising and publicity. -FER PS: Apologies if this has already been mentioned (I haven't read all of the posts in the threads on this topic), regarding Aquino and Bygrave: "A regua cylindrica de Bygrave e as minhas Altitude and Azimuth Tables: com uma exposi??o succinta da Nova Navega??o Altazimuthal e Isoazimuthal pelas formulas e tabuas em tan +/- sec" F. R. de Aquino, Imprensa Naval (Brazil), 1935 An approximate translation of the title: "The Bygrave cylindrical slide rule and my altitude and azimuth tables: with a succinct explanation of alt-azimuth and iso-azimuth new navigation by formulas and tables in tan+/-sec" I haven't read it; just passing it along. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc To post, email NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
