Frank, as usual, you have provided an excellent insight into a subject you are knowledgeable about
Before I began to read the book, just paging through it, I did realize it was not a biography in the classical sense. But having read "Longitude " by Dava Sobel, my curiosity was peaked a bit about the alternate story, if in fact there was one
While I don't think Maskelyne was a villain, it seems to me that in this case, the Maskelyne versus Harrison was more about a mathematician versus a practical mechanic
Finally, I'm surprised by your statement about Maskelyne's ridiculous tables, you as a lunarian. I'm still grateful for starting me on this journey of CN and especially for that Lunar class at Mystic some years ago which coincided with the collection of Harrison's clocks being at Mystic at the same time
