Peary, in his comments about the Sun sights they did on the way to the North Pole, desribes Mercury being susceptible to the breezes blowing on it even though there was glass "tent" over it. He refers to the "trough" in which the warmed Mercury was poured prior to the shots. The effort and set up was quite elaborate.
