In old books algebra was often not used. Instead there were a series of text based "rules", which presumably the mariners had to memorise. Taken at random from an 19th century book here is rule XCIII defining how to calculate the accumulated rate of a chronometer (may need to digitally zoom to read it). I would need to convert it to algebraic form to understand this and the other rules..
