Misread the problem. Always an issue when attempting to answer correctly!
[Tie a string to the barn and walk to the river]
Station another person by the river to grab the string when you get there and then drag the remainder to the house. Once at the house, have the other person walk along the river until the shortest path is found.
Requirements: two people, one string, no cup. No knowledge of optics or physics. Just simple walking about

At least he would have been able to follow the string back to the house if it got dark while he was thinking about it, but did this get the water to the animals in the barn, and what is the shortest distance he needed to walk? DaveP
