In his 1901 book the famous instrument maker William Stanley warned of the hazard of mercury - to sextants. "The smallest particle, if it touches the frame, will eat into the brass and destroy its strength." http://books.google.com/books?id=QzM7AAAAMAAJ&jtp=400 Several types of artificial horizon are described later in that chapter. --
