And Mercury was not 8.6° from the Sun — that was actually its distance from the Moon. It's a pity the sky was not clear. At the end of civil twilight, Mercury and the Moon were both slender crescents about 6° above the western horizon. Both bodies are visible again this evening in northern latitudes, Mercury a little lower and the Moon quite a bit higher than yesterday. The phase angle of Mercury will be 146° and it will be almost exactly above the Sun. A clear view to the west down to about 5° will be necessary.
