Sorry George, I don't see any treachery from the British side, and therefore nothing to be embarrassed about from the account you have given, so I fail to see why it is not mentioned, except perhaps to avoid more embarrassment to the French. Sort of analogous to "Sorry I had to hit you last night, but I couldn't let you drive while intoxicated." How many British and American lives would have been lost if the French fleet had been permitted to go to Hitler? It would seem the French admiral must have been loyal to the German Vichy government if he was willing to fight the British so readily. The British made a good move that saved many Allied lives and shortened the war. I had previously been unaware of this incident. Craig
