This is a request on behalf of those of us who receive postings by e-mail.

Please DO NOT identify a Navlist post just by its message number. Provide
other information; who it's from, on what date it was sent.

Let me explain why. Every post has been given a message number, which was
found to be particularly useful, particularly when Navlist business was
hectic. Until Jan 1st this year, that meesage number was included with the
subject label of every emailed message. This allowed easy searching for
messages, by number.

Changes were then made which caused those message numbers to disappear from
all e-mailed postings. From the email reader, there is at present no way to
discover the number of any message. We were asked to bear with this loss,
which would only be temporary.

Since then, we have had repeated promises that message numbers would
shortly reappear on emails, but it hasn't happened yet. Instead, we have
the worst possible situation, in which those numbers are available to  half
(or so) of the membership, but if they are so used, are hidden from the
other half.

When message numbers reappear on emails, then I hope they will be regulary
used, once again.

Yes, I CAN find out which posting a message-number refers to, by calling-up
the message board and scrolling through the message list. But that's a
palaver I can well do without, when I already have Navlist messages sorted
in a box on my screen.

While I'm at it, another request. When replying to another member's
specific posting, please, if you don't quote his words (and there are times
when it's sensible not-to), at the very least identify the poster, and the
posting, that you are replying to. It may be obvious to you who he is, but
it may not be obvious to other readers.

And another request. If the discussion veers away from its original
threadname, consider changing it, but when you do, think of this. The
Navlist archive goes back for some years now, and with luck, it will
continue for years to come. And in future years, researchers may well be
delving into the archive, searching out information that's relevant to some
unimagined quest or other. Invent a threadname with them in mind, so let it
be meaningful and relevant, to lead them in the right direction. Same
applies if you wish to start a new topic. Let me add, however, that over
recent months, threadnames seem to have been rather well-chosen and
appropriate.
