Thanks for responding with pics of your instrument. Here are pics of Left-Handed and Right-Handed version of the older (1940's) Warren-Knight instruments I was looking at. I think what you have would be what Warren-Knight would describe as "left-handed," meaning that if you held the instrument with the legs pointing away from you, only the center and left legs are capable of being closed together, i.e. 0 degrees, whereas the center and right legs can only close to about 2-3 degress. I agree, that is not much of a difference. On the older Warren-Knight instruments, the pair that can't completely close can only close to around 11-12 degrees. Guessing the reason they can't close as much as yours can has to do with the Warren-Knight instruments using a vernier scale instead of a micrometer drum. Just speculating, but maybe this is just as simple as "you had to have both in case there was a tighter angle in play than one or the other version could handle?"
