I was thinking about a system with cameras at fixed angles covering the sky and horizon with sub arc minute resolution (after averaging), Using image processing to get altitudes and azimuths of observed stars planets sun and moon, and GNSS when available as training data to calibrate optics. Then it provides a running estimate of position based on available information, with an uncertainty contour. When I was imagining what it looks like I realized that something very similar is available in kit form for automated meteor observations https://www.allskycams.com/products/index.html . I would go for different coverage and resolution adapted to our purposes. Maybe RGB cameras on the horizon would help fit a refraction model using the different frequency bands? Cost of these kits is about $1.5k I think, so it is getting within hobby range. Anyone attempted such a camera array yet? On a boat would probably go for a port and starboard array for maximum sky coverage. Bill
