What's the history of the small vernier scale on sextant micrometers? It seems to be mostly un-necessary, but new navigators tend to buy their sextants early in the game, when they don't know much. I suspect the illusion of additional accuracy helps sales. Or maybe the small vernier became popular from USN practice? Navy Mk. II sextants had that little vernier, if I remember correctly.
