    A news item about recent Indonesian forest fires turning the sky blood red caught my attention. I'm familiar with refraction and its effects and compensations-for in celestial navigation but I had never heard of Mie Scattering till now.

    The blood red sky resulted from atmospheric particulates, smoke from forest fires, that are similar or larger than the wavelengths of the scattered light.

    Quite a few news outlets are reporting the phenomena:
