Re: Minimum Altitude for Daytime Venus

    Hello All:

All of this discussion about Venus has precipitated a question in my mind. ...... if the sun is out and sky is moderately blue, and even if you precompute , what is the best relative angle between sun and Venus to spot Venus with naked eye?

By the way, summer time Venus shot is so easy I don’t even bother anymore. BUT, kids on the summer-time beach are fascinated that the first observed  summer-time  “star”  is really a planet.  Always fun for kids!

    Thanks in advance.

I use  a Astra 3 B with 4 x 40 scope and a Whole Horizon Mirror fitted to  shoot Venus during the day. I have lost count of how many times i have had intercepts of under 1 nautcal mile with the odd 0.0 turning up on occasion . When i see the bright speck of light that is Venus  i am always satisfied with a job done to the best of my ability.

Gregs Rudzinski's mention of using a Sun Spot to focus to infinity is a fantastic tip  that i am eager to put into practice.

If Nav list members are interested i have numerous daytime Venus sights fully hand documented with all the working and plot .I use HO:229 with the Nautical Almanac. After doing the long hand stuff i cross check results with Star Pilot and  Navigator software both of which are superb and user friendly pieces of software.

I have managed to shoot Jupiter during the day once or twice , one need a very clear sky to get this done.

Compared to the legends of Astro Nav found on Nav List I am but a hack .

    Kind Regards , Paul Jackson.
