I just ordered a book titled Selling the True Time: Nineteenth-Century Timekeeping in America, Ian Bartky. I may have found this reference on Navlist just the other day.
I'm also exploring semaphore. The famous Peace Symbol began life as the semaphore "ND," standing for "Nuclear Disarmament." That too is an interesting story. (And, somewhat ironically "semaphore" is also from the Greek "sign" (sema σήμα) and "bearer" (phoros φόρος).)
