I'm not suggesting you try this but thought it might be of interest to mention. I came across an old school method of resilvering a sextant mirror as follows:
1. Remove old remnants of silvering
2. Clean glass with xylene
3. Take a piece of tin foil roughly the size of the glass
4. Place a drop of mercury on the tin foil and rub it into the foil with "your finger" until it starts to form an amalgam and is tacky
5. Place the foil tacky side onto the glass and smooth out.
6. Apply a coat of lacquer to the foil, let it dry and you are done.
I wonder if this method is anywhere close to how the original mirrors were made for you octant.
