For the last couple days I've retained all my email instead of dumping
the trash daily. This morning I compared the messages in the Nav-L
archive to the approximately 18 that I have retained. Only one email in
the archive definitely seems to be missing from my system. It's this one

Because of increasing spam, in April 2003 I completely overhauled my
email setup. The first thing I did was discard my old address and
replace it with several:

1. Private address.

2. Business address.

3. Mailing list address. This is the one I use for Nav-L. It's fairly
protected since the web archive hides addresses.

4. Usenet address. This one is exposed to the spambots that harvest
addresses from discussion groups, so it's "munged". That is, instead of
@earthlink.net, the domain appears as @earINVALIDthlink.net in my
postings. A human who wants to reply privately can easily remove the
INVALID, but few spambots are smart enough to figure out the trick.

My ISP lets me choose my username (the part of the address before the
@), so in all my addresses it's a rather long random alphanumeric. This
defeats brute force guessing attacks from spammers. Since we normally
handle addresses with mouse clicks instead of typing them by hand, a
long random one is no trouble.

I have to admit that it was a hassle to switch my email to multiple new
addresses, but that was just a one-time hit. Every day I get repaid for
that effort. It's getting on 3 years now, and not one spam has ever
reached my private address. The others get a only trickle of spam,
insignificant compared to the legitimate traffic. I use no spam
filtering at all.

You can get the Nav-L messages that way. Send an email to the list
server (NOT the list!) with this in the message body:

SET Navigation-L Command
