Tony, Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, I'm aware that the word in Russian for "peace" has several other meanings, but I never thought about it when reading "War and Peace." Now that you mention it, however, "War and Society" suits the content of the novel better.
In a similar vein, the title of Tolstoy's novel "Resurrection" is occasionally mistranslated as "Sunday." That's a wholly unacceptable mistranslation, I think.
Having translated a multitude of documents during my career, I've come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a "true" translation and that all translations are approximations, especially literary translations.
Now back to traditional navigation before Czar Frank scolds us.
