Dave,
I worked in the field of aviation engineering most of my life and apart from other things was a qualified tech in the area of Auto Pilots and Flight Director systems. I stepped out of the business as glass panels were becoming a reality.
In todays world, as with aviation, I cannot see a need for the sextant on the bridge of a modern ship. In the event of a power failure a battery powered pocket GPS would be more useful, as it would in a lifeboat.
Okay I shall go and wash my mouth out with soap :)
