Let me add that Google maps do not cover uninhabited parts of Canada. I already inquired in the NavList about maps of polar regions on the internet. I received several answers, but still do not know how to find reasonable maps. (I need them when I read about Polar exploration. Most of the books on this subject either do not have maps, or have some very schematic and unsatisfactory maps). So I have nothing better than a wall map of the world:-) Alex. ________________________________________ From: NavList@fer3.com [NavList@fer3.com] on behalf of Bob Goethe [NoReply_Goethe@fer3.com] Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2015 10:46 PM To: eremenko@math.purdue. Subject: [NavList] Re: Modern celestial navigation: when and why? I have pondered how it can be that Google Maps seems to know where my very DRIVEWAY is on my cellphone, but nautical charts are scores of yards off. Actually, I think it is easy to imagine how the Canadian government could be using an early coordinate system, and could be slow to correct their charts. That is an enormous job. The surprise is that Google seems to have solved this problem...though even for them, I understand some areas are mapped more carefully than others. They are testing their driverless car in San Francisco, since the surrounding roadways have been mapped with a degree of precision that we would not see in most of North America. As I say, I am new to this list. Do my replies to somebody else's replies just keep getting longer and longer, as all prior text is appended to the bottom of what I send?
