I was about to post my opinion when ran across Alan's. I agree completely. Celestial is NOT as accurate as GPS. GPS works all the time. Well, the satellites work all the time, but maybe not my receiver. So it's nice to have a backup in case the screen goes blank. It doesn't have to be a $2000 sextant, a plastic one will do fine. And a current Nautical Almanac and a $15 scientific calculator to do Law of Cosines sight reduction. Or maybe Stan K's Celestial Tools on my laptop, which will give me both an almanac and do sight reduction!

Sextant navigation isn't as accurate as the electronic version, though it has proven to be more than just good enough. When and if the electronics go to the devil, as I suppose happens, it will still work. Electronics have been known to go down.
