Unless perhaps you meant that lunars are "magnificent desolation"!
Now I wonder: the Apollo astronauts' time was measured in millions of dollars per hour, so they would not have gone in for recreational use of navigation instruments on the Moon, even if they had the inclination. So, who will be the first to take a "lunar" from the lunar surface, Earth limb to star? Also, hey, Phobos and Deimos move fast, so they're probably really good for the purpose.
