    I got the formulas from the Nautical Almanac. Starting on page 277 (of the 2013 ed.) is an explanation of how to do sight reduction by calculator. The 7.32 & 4.32 are constants but, to be honest, I don't really understand them either. I'm no mathematician, and I'm only beginning to wrap my head around spherical trig. The "H" stands for apparent altitude. In the N.A. you will find an additional correction formula for temperature and pressure differences as well. I don't know about the other formula you proposed, but I'm sure another list member will chime in soon about that.
