What appears to be an early Coutinho instrument by C Plath is shown here:http://cvc.instituto-camoes.pt/ciencia/sextante2.jpg. Unless the photo has been reversed, it is held in the left hand and has the cross of the T at the bottom. Another early version, a vernier instrument said to have been used in the 1922 Atlantic crossing is shown here: http://restosdecoleccao.blogspot.co.nz/2010/06/1-travessia-aerea-do-atlantico-sul.html.
