    Re Blimps

My grandad flew ss type blimps for the RNAS in ww1,1915-1919, mostly anti-submarine convoy patrol North Sea. He hated to talk about it, so I had to really push him, since he got loads of bravery medals. He didn't say much about stability, but said speed was about 50-60 mph. He says he saw lots of Uboats and attacked with hand held bombs and never hit anything confirmed. However, they all dived as soon as he arrived which was good for the convoy. He also had primitive spark transmitter radio and could inform nearbye fast frigates who then persuded the attack. He says he lost many pals killed, but none to enemy action, all to "accidents". So I doubt whether these hydrogen bombs were very safe. The totally true good news is he crash landed in my then 19 year old grandmother's garden in 1919, just before me-mob and the rest is history!
