    Stan,

Many thanks for the comments. Another good pub, in my opinion, is Dougal Robertson's 1975 "Survival at Sea, a  Manual", which I carry with me at all times.

BTW,  pls excuse the errors in composition. I'm in the process of breaking in a new computer and the different keyboard touch is giving me a fit.

I can believe that "All Is Lost" is somewhat of a take-off on "Adrift", which I agree was quite good.  If you have not read it, do not make the same mistake I did.  I "read" it as an audiobook (narrated by the author) while commuting to my job.  The problem was that there were many descriptions of things that Callahan constructed, etc., that I had difficulty picturing.  Ultimately I borrowed the paper book from the library just so I could look at the illustrations.  (Turns out what I pictured in my head was, in many cases, pretty close.)

BTW, one of the books that Callahan managed to bring on his raft was the book by Maurice and Maralyn Bailey, "117 Days Adrift" (UK title) or "Staying Alive!" (US title, the one I have), another great story.  Their resourcefulness and experience helped keep Callahan alive.

Some time ago, the movie “All is lost” was the topic of discussion. Not having see the show at the time, I had no comment. Well it recently played at the zoo in which I now live – I'm sure glad it was for free as it would have upset me terribly if I had paid good money to see it. IMHO it was terrible from start to finish – the seamanship was awful, the temporary repair was inept, and that fancy sextant apparently stowed as emergency life raft was ridiculous; and, by the way where was his EPIRB. My wife walked out in the middle out of sheer boredom. However, the purpose of this post is no to pan the movie, but to invite attention to its apparent source; I didn't take note of any credits, but if they were not there they should have been – it took me some time to find it,  but the movie appears to be an obvious take-off from the book “Adrift ,76 days lost at sea”, by Steve Callahan, a true tale of shipwreck west of the Canary Islands and subsequent liferaft drift of some 76 days until picked up by fishermen off the island of Guadeloupe. A really great tale of survival at sea which I heartily recommend to all.
