You will really enjoy this museum, It's first class. My original post understates their navigation instruments collection. It also included cross staffs, quadrants, backstaffs, tripod sextants, various astronomy telescopes and sundials, dead recokning items like taffrail speed indicators, chip logs and lead lines. Attached are some extra images.
The collection is housed in the Navy Ministry building. They recently dropped the passport requiement when entering the building and they no longer prohibit photography.
If you are traveling with others who many not be into this type of museum, the National Prado Art Museum is on the next block so there is something for every taste and interest. If you use the Madrid City Tour get-on-get-off bus to tour the city, the Prado is one of their stops so you can easily branch out from there.
