BTW there is no good reason to draw in the meridians when plotting LOPs on a plotting sheet. When you have a chart with the meridians already printed then those lines help you in plotting you AP and in taking out the longitude of the resulting fix. But if you are working on a plotting sheet they aren't useful. Just use the longitude scale at the lower right hand side of the UPS to take out the longitude of your AP with your dividers and plot the AP. After you have plotted your fix then use your dividers again to measure the fix from the central meridian (pre-printed on the UPS) and carry it over to the longitude scale again to read out the longitude of the fix. It saves a lot of work doing it this way. This is how it is done in flight navigation using the Mk 6 plotting board.

    Gary,
When the Longitude lines are drawn on the UPS the difference between N40d and N39 are somewhat impressively large. Yes, it's small but enough to lead to have asked the question in the first instance. Can you explain the reason...simply?
