The level vials are contained in 3/4 in square steel tubes of 150 mm length. The windows for viewing the vials were cut out with a Dremel tool cutting wheel. The feet are brass 1/2 round rod soldered to the metal base. After the level vials are inserted, resting on about 10-12 layeres of folded yellow paper, the ends were closed with wooden plugs. The fine adjustment or "calibration" for leveling the vials was done by sanding the brass rod "feet" with 300 grit sandpaper until they showed a cenetered bubble when the vials were rotated 180 degrees. There are several articles on the Nav-list about level calibration sequences. There are also instructions for this at the web site of the vials manuafacturer, "Level Developments".
