21-22 March 2014
Maritime culture and Britain in the age of J.M.W. Turner
To coincide with the critically acclaimed exhibition, Turner and the Sea, the museum is hosting a two-day international conference exploring the cultural impact of the sea. This interdisciplinary conference will locate the exhibition’s themes within a broader maritime context, with sixteen papers exploring the literary, visual and political significance of the sea in the late eighteenth-and nineteenth centuries. There will be a private view for delegates and an early morning discussion session in the gallery. Speakers include Professor Andrew Lambert, Dr Eleanor Hughes, Dr Leo Costello and Professor Catherine Roach.

The Naval Dockyard Society AGM and conference: British Dockyards in the First World War
Commemorating this momentous centenary, the focus on Dreadnoughts and Rosyth is apt, as Dreadnought warships were crucial to the arms race leading to the First World War and Rosyth’s use was vital to its success. This programme will address both national policy and social history, with the unprecedented use of women in what had hitherto exclusively been men’s jobs.

Longitudes Examined: Tercentenary conference on the history of the Board of Longitude and the determination of longitude at sea
This major international conference marks the tercentenary of the passage of the Longitude Act on 20 July 1714. It offers the opportunity to discuss the history of the Board of Longitude during its subsequent century of activity, and the broad implications of the enterprises to determine longitude at sea. This is a conference designed for the general public, which will address the main elements of the narratives of reward, discovery, controversy and excitement that surrounded the longitude projects of the time. The conference will explore how navigational techniques changed, how the Board of Longitude worked and the influence it exerted, and its very wide institutional, cultural and social significance.
The Conference is organised under the auspices of the AHRC project The Board of Longitude 1714–1828: Science, innovation and empire in the Georgian world. It coincides with the opening of a major exhibition on Longitude at the National Maritime Museum (RMG).
