Someone who's able to view it can also print it to PDF, then share the PDF between friends off-list.

    Robert Swartz, you asked:
"Can you copy and paste the article on Navlist."

No, we can't do that. Please do not copy and paste content protected by copyright. You can post one-line snips under fair use. I will add that the essay includes no news. It covers topics that we have discussed in NavList messages at length in the past dozen years.

"When I go to the link, N.Y. Times blocks it out and offers to sell me an online subscription."

There is a "simple" way around this. Set up a second browser on your computer (I use Firefox for this but MS Edge would also be a good choice). Turn off all cookies and turn on highest privacy settings. Now when you visit many websites they won't recognize you as a return visit. When you see a link you want to visit in your standard browser, most likely Chrome, just copy the link, open your second browser, and paste the link. You can now visit many websites as if you are new to their site every time. Most news websites allow one to five visits per month without a subscription. A few, like WSJ, have no free viewing, and this system doesn't help in any way.
