Frank,
How about "Nautical Unit"... like "Astronomical Unit" only a lot smaller? A minute after all is supposed to be small (minute) part of a larger unit. One could also talk about the "Geographical Unit" being 1 degree of longitude measured at the equator.
Like you I dislike acronyms and am not a fan of overly terse terminology so "1 degree on the Earth's surface" seems just fine,
