There's a letter to the editor in the Jan/Feb Ocean Navigator magazine (p. 37) by a gentleman named Alex Abbott on this subject. He agrees with you - the only time "the" is used is when there's a modifying word or phrase before the name (e.g., "the schooner Bluenose," but otherwise simply "Bluenose").
So there's another vote.
