The Navigation Symposium at Mystic Seaport, CT is this weekend - Friday through Sunday, November 3rd-5th. See attached program.
Even if you are not attending personally, you can participate and benefit by submitting navigation questions to NavList Live. During the Live session, a panel of experts will try to answer them. A brief summary of their response will be posted on NavList. You must post your NavList Live question either in-person or by email to x@fer3.com (use subject “NavList Live”) before Sunday's session (November 5th at 1:00PM Eastern. Seen Saving Time footnote below).
Your question must be brief - 160 characters not including your name and contact email. You can attach one optional image.
I'm submitting these three questions:
Question 1:
What is a Marea-Kielhorn Director used for? It seems to be a solar azimuth device of some sort, lifeboat navigation? Compass calibration? (Image attached)
Question 2:
What does a Sferescopio Del Pino do? It has sighting for celestial bodies and changable plates like an astrolabe. Can it be used for celestial navigation? (Image attached)
Question 3:
The Hyatt's Celestial Coordinator and a similar model offered by the U.S. Power Squadron, are orthographic and stereographic projections (front and back) of two spherical grid systems - celestial and azimuthal. Could they be used to graphicaly reduce sights? If so, what accuracy could you expect? (Image attached)
