Of course, there have been vast advances, but you can assume that the majority of them are highly classified by those navies which have worked on the issues, especially the USN. This book by Cohen is the basis for the new chapter on "Bathymetric Navigation" in the 2017 edition of "Bowditch" which you can get here: NavList.net/m2.aspx/g39214. Needless to say, if you just want an introduction to the concepts, stripped completely of actual USN practice and rendered down to the state of the subject c.1970, then you could just read this chapter in Bowditch. It certainly covers some of the general concepts. It was already obsolete by the time "The Hunt for Red October" appeared in theaters in 1990 (now 27 years in the past but only 20 years after Cohen's book was published). And by the way, same publisher! Tom Clancy's original novel was published by the US Naval Institute Press in 1984 just 14 years after they published Cohen's "Bathymetric Navigation and Charting".
