I remember hearing in an astrophysics class that the gravitational pull causing peaks and dips on the ocean surface was caused by the interaction of the earth's gravity and the gravitational pull from space and the moon. Without the tidal swells, the surface of the ocean is as varied as the surface of land. Sharon Casey
